Story

Hello there! Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Those who have known me for a while, will be familiar with me doing slightly insane things - Tough Guy, Ironman, Escape from Alcatraz, abseiling down the Wesleyan building, scuba diving war wrecks in Scapa Flow...you name it, I'd seriously consider it.  However, for the last 6 years I have focused on building a business, raising a child, and putting on a vast amount of weight!  Yay!

And so, the time has come to face facts.  I can no longer get into my wardrobe and entering a triathlon is cheaper than buying larger clothes (although triathlons are expensive and it was a close run thing!).  I've already discovered that my old tri suit and wetsuit have seriously shrunk in the last 6 years.  I didn't even think that was possible...?!?!

Anyway, while I'm about it, I thought I'd pitch in for cancer research.  Why? Well (a) my dad died from non-hodgkins lymphoma 15 years ago and it seems like a fitting tribute and (b) I want to raise awareness of massage and cancer.

If you enter "massage cancer" into Google you get such a wealth of contradicting opinions that most therapists won't touch a cancer client.  WTF?  If anyone ever needed a bit of TLC, it's surely someone facing the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis.

The myth is that massage stimulates  the body and can spread cancer.  Pardon my French, but that's bollocks.  Yes, don't massage a primary or secondary cancer location, but otherwise, provided your consultant is happy with you having massage at your stage of cancer treatment, go for it! Massage can only benefit you by relaxing, easing and soothing you mentally and physically.

And, if the worst comes to the worst, as one client once put it to me, when I said I needed the OK from her oncologist before I could massage her: "Sweetheart, I only have 3 months left to live, trust me, nothing you do can possibly be anything but good!".

So, hopefully by donating money to Cancer Research we can help beat the thing in the long run and, in the short term, give those suffering the permission to have a little therapy.
