We help people with a learning disability to live their lives as they choose.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to see why I'm running the 10k - hopefully after I explain a bit about Mencap, you will feel inclined to donate to a charity that is close to my heart.

Mencap supports people with learning disabilities throughout the UK - they understand that people who are affected by various learning disabilities are still amazing characters; with feelings, ambitions and expectations.

**There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK**

Mencap promote inclusion in society – urging for government support and awareness of how we can adapt to make life manageable for people with learning disabilities. After all, the government provides services that allow physically disabled people to live in comfort and without prejudice … why not people whose disability you may not necessarily see?

Mencap supports people with learning disabilities throughout their lives - from childhood education, to employment, and eventually old age.

They listen, they advise, they support.

My cousin Hope is 18 years old. She is a feisty, confident girl who goes to college, gossips, and knows exactly what is going on in the latest films. Like any girl her age she loves girly accessories and clothes, and she has so many hobbies I can barely keep track. She has an incredible sense of humour, an endless intuitive nature, and strong morals.

She also has Down’s syndrome.

But that is the last thing I think of – to all who know her, she is just Hope. Loving, witty, energetic and fun…

Unfortunately, some people do stigmatise people with learning disabilities and treat them differently.

**8 out of 10 children with a learning disability are bullied. **

Hope has an amazing network of family and friends who give her the love and support she deserves, but not all people with learning difficulties have that nurturing environment.

**Over 6 in 10 people with a learning disability in residential care or supported living have no choice about where they live and with whom.**

As Hope reaches adulthood, like all of us she will face challenges and new experiences that will shape her life path. People with learning difficulties shouldn’t have their happiness or aspirations cut short simply because there isn’t the emotional, educational support or practical facilities available.

Mencap allows people with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible, in an environment where they have choices - an environment where they are happy.

As well as educational opportunities (Mencap National College), Mencap provide leisurely and social activities too. Mencap also offers respite for carers and families of people with learning disabilities.

THE RUN: Let me just say - I'm not a runner!! The only race I took part in at school was the Novelty Race - now that says it all! I know that 10k isn't a huge distance, but we all have to start somewhere! I plan to do it in a good time (45-50mins) and for a good cause…. so the sense of achievement, with everyone's support, will be so worthwhile!
