Story
The #BlackInGeoscience initiative was born following the success of an European Geosciences Union (EGU) blog post by my colleague Lucia Perez-Diaz in June 2020, showcasing Black scientists and highlighting the need to work together to increase diversity, equality and inclusion in the Earth Sciences.
Lucia designed a #BlackInGeoscience logo that quickly became a symbol of the need to stand together against racism and discrimination in our discipline. She and I discussed ways of further raising awareness and we decide to produce the logo on pin badges and to distribute them as widely as we can. We thought we could also use the distribution of the badges as means of raising awareness of anti-racism charities. We hope that, if you are reading this, it is because a pin badge has made its way into your hands (if not, go sign up to request one on the link below), and you've chosen to make a donation in return. Thank you for joining in!
About the charity:
The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was founded to tackle inequality in all forms. We're dedicated to transforming the life chances of young people and improving the world in which they live. We support young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to inspire and enable them to succeed in the career of their choice. We support community groups to develop new skills and play an active role in building stronger communities. And we help organisations to create a more inclusive culture in order to achieve lasting social impact.
