One of our team - Jeremy - has had the privaledge of working with Raleigh and last year joined expedition 04F based in Costa Rica and Nicaragua as Logistics Manager. Somehow he had persuaded the staff selection team that his project management consultancy skills could be easily applied to the logistics post!
Raleigh is a youth development charity. The heart of Raleigh is the development of British youths.
In Jeremy's words... On my expedition there were 40 staff and 100 venturers. Of these 100 venturers, 30 were local venturers from Costa Rica given a once in a lifetime opportunity. 50 were self-funders, youths who had raised the £3,500 themselves either through sponsorship or mummy & daddy paying. But the real stars and the real characters and the real reason for Raleigh were the 20 venturers from the Motivate programme.
These are 'at-risk' venturers, normally 17-19 years old, who have had behavioural problems for much of their lives. Many of them living in deprived areas of London, Manchester and Glasgow; many living away from their parents in social housing; many have never been on a plane or even outside of their town. For them a flight to Costa Rica to join an expedition of 140 people and live in the jungle is completely and utterly beyond anything they could have ever imagined. And believe me it is tough for them, and they are tough for the staff and at times we could all of killed each other!
But when you meet one of them in London 6 months later - as I did - and they look you in the eye and thank you for changing their lives - then you know it was worth it.
Our fund-raising in the Braveheart challenge is for them - please support us.
