Marathon des Sables 2020 · 3 April 2020 to 13 April 2020 ·

We support The Rifles & its antecedent regiments, including via The Rifles Benevolent Trust, charity No: 1119071, which incorporates Care for Casualties & the Always a Rifleman Programme. Together the Trusts support all serving Riflemen & veterans, with the AARP meeting mental health needs.

Story

In April 2020 Alex Aitken and Dan Unwin are running the Marathon Des Sables to raise money for Care for Casualties. The event dubbed "the hardest foot race on the planet" takes place in the Sahara desert in Morocco. Over 6 days we'll be running (and probably some walking) 251 km over sand dunes and jebels. We'll also be carrying all our food and supplies with us as we go.

Care for Casualties is a charity set up by The Rifles regiment to support Riflemen wounded in action. Set up in 2009 the charity works hard to support soldiers with life-changing injuries sustained in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The charity also provides assistance to serving and veteran Riflemen who suffer from PTSD and mental health issues.

Lieutenant Dan Unwin and Captain Alex Aitken are both serving officers in The Rifles regiment. Having returned from an operational tour in Afghanistan in 2019, where we took part in a 24 hour Murph for Care for Casualties, we were looking for another challenge. MDS seems a suitably challenging event.

We're running 6 marathons in 6 days in the Sahara desert. Yes we're that stupid. Please give us a sponsor!
