I first signed up to Brighton Marathon in the autumn of 2019 with the event due to take place in the April 2020. The date of the marathon has been moved several times due to the Coronavirus pandemic and we are finally set to toe the line on 12th Sept 2021. 

Since initially signing up to this event the whole world has changed significantly, but recent developments in Afghanistan have been incredibly concerning to read about. The Taliban took full control of the country in August 2021 and the future of Afghanistan couldn't be less certain. 

As Western countries begin to withdraw aid funding to Afghanistan, the largely international donor-dependent health system will rapidly deteriorate. This coupled with rising health system needs due to Covid-19 and conflict in the country is likely to leave Afghan people without the medical assistance that they desperately need. 

I'd like to take this opportunity to do what I can and raise some money for an organization that remain present and operational across Afghanistan. EMERGENCY provide life-saving medical support to those that need it most.

EMERGENCY provides free, high-quality healthcare to victims of war, poverty & landmines, alongside building hospitals and training local medical staff. They help people like economics student Suliman, who became paralysed at 23 years old when a bomb exploded at his friend’s wedding in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was taken to EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre where he was operated on. He says “In Kabul, there are explosions and attacks every day. Hearing an ambulance siren is enough to be terrified again. I just want to go home to my baby”
