Story
Being diagnosed in 2020 with breast cancer. I underwent a lumpectomy and subsequent lymph node removal in the same month followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy with subsequent 10 years now of endocrine therapy. I fully understand the impact breast cancer has on a persons life.
The treatments are hard work and quite often are left with residual and long standing health conditions as well as the psychological impact breast cancer has.
I myself have been left with muscleskeletal issues and fatigue, which has thrown me into early menopause, however despite this I feel that I am luckier than a lot of people who have a lot more to deal with physically.
When I was going through chemotherapy walking really helped me, some days I could only manage around 10 minutes of walking, however it helped me physically and mentally.
At this time I was able to access My Breast Cancer Support and met Sara and the amazing group of people. I went on some of the crocodile walks, attended wellness days and some of the events that had been organised. I felt the group was integral in supporting and motivating me at a time when I was at my most difficult in relation to my health and mental wellbeing. Through the group I have increased confidence, become knowledgeable about diet and exercise and it has been lovely to meet other women that have been through their own experiences. I cannot thank the group enough for all the brilliant work they all do.
Therefore I am doing these walks to give something back to the charity. It sits in my heart all the hard work and effort put in to support individuals like myself, and I'm quite lucky that I can get out and walk. I want to try and raise some funds so that the charity can continue to help other women and men who have been affected with breast cancer and are living with the after effects of treatments. I am very passionate about this, and feel while I can still do these things I want to help others, sadly we lose too many people to this disease, which is also another motivating factor.
The 28 walks are taken from the book called "Peak District Outstanding Walks " and range from 3.5 miles to 11.5 miles. The walks will be adapted due to the terrain and risks of injuring myself as some of them are steep and involve scrambling. Photos and videos will be taken en-route to track my journey.
First three walks now completed (20 April) Deepdale, Cutthroat Bridge and Broomhead Reservoir got a little lost on Cutthroat and Broomhead was tough as mostly uphill but fantastic scenery.
