Story

100 Days of Wildlife Rescue

£45 a day. 100 days. £4,500 to keep us caring.

Every day, injured, sick and orphaned wildlife across Sussex needs help. Sometimes that means an emergency rescue, sometimes weeks of specialist rehabilitation, and sometimes simply giving the right advice to someone who has found an animal in trouble.

At Sompting Wildlife Rescue, we're doing everything we can to be there when we're needed.

But we need your help to keep going.

A small charity facing growing demand

What began as a small wildlife rescue operating from our home has grown into a dedicated wildlife hospital, providing care for a wide variety of wild animals.

Over the last few years, the number of rescues and admissions we've dealt with has tripled, while requests for advice and assistance have also continued to increase.

That's three times as many rescues and admissions, alongside more people contacting us for help, advice and guidance.

And we're still a small, independent charity run entirely by volunteers.

Our founders are both Registered Veterinary Nurses, giving their professional skills, experience and time without payment. Alongside our wonderful volunteers, we work to give wildlife the best possible chance of recovery and return to the wild.

Nobody receives a salary from the charity.

The rising cost of wildlife rescue

Like everyone else, we're facing rising costs.

Electricity, water, fuel, animal food, bedding, veterinary supplies, waste disposal and maintaining our hospital facilities all come at a price.

To give just two examples:

- Pigeon food has increased from £12 to £17 a bag.

- Hay has risen from £5.40 to £8.50 a bale.

These increases might seem small individually, but when you're caring for wildlife every day, they soon add up.

We work hard to keep our costs down. We compare suppliers, buy in bulk when economical, make use of donated materials and purchase reliable second-hand equipment where appropriate.

Financial donations allow us to buy exactly what's needed, when it's needed, at the best available price.

£45 a day just to keep going

Our current estimated running costs are approximately £45 a day — around £1,350 a month.

That covers the everyday essentials needed to keep the rescue and wildlife hospital operating.

But there's something important we want people to understand.

This isn't a budget for expansion.

It doesn't provide for additional facilities, increased rescue capacity or new services, despite the growing demand for our help. Major equipment purchases and unexpected veterinary bills can also create additional financial pressures.

We're simply asking for help to maintain the care we already provide.

Our 100 Days Challenge

We want to raise £4,500 to help fund 100 days of wildlife rescue.

Every donation brings us closer:

- £10 helps towards everyday rescue costs.

- £25 helps towards essential care and supplies.

- £45 represents one day's running costs.

- £315 represents a full week's running costs.

Whether it's keeping a tiny hedgehog warm, caring for an injured pigeon, providing ongoing rehabilitation for a fox or helping someone understand when a wild animal needs intervention, every contribution helps us continue our work.

We can't promise to save every animal. But we can promise that we'll continue doing everything we reasonably can to give those in our care the best possible chance.

Please help us keep going

We're proud of what we've built and the wildlife we've helped. But with demand increasing and costs continuing to rise, we cannot do it alone.

100 days. £4,500. One small charity making a big difference.

If you can donate, thank you. If you can't, sharing our appeal with friends, family and local communities is another wonderful way to support us.

From all of us at Sompting Wildlife Rescue, thank you for helping us be there for Sussex wildlife.
