The Juniper Trust began supporting small, sustainable projects in Nepal over 30 years ago, focusing on helping the poorest communities—especially children. Proudly volunteer-run, the Juniper Trust keeps costs to a minimum, with 98% of funds raised going directly to our projects.

Story

Nepal Evergreen is a volunteer-led initiative dedicated to planting a diverse range of trees and plants across impoverished rural regions of Nepal. By revitalizing natural habitats and supporting community-led afforestation, the project not only enhances local biodiversity but also creates sustainable economic opportunities through community farms, orchards, and private land use. Additionally, it contributes to offsetting carbon emissions, particularly those generated by tourism, helping Nepal build a more resilient and eco-conscious future.

By preserving biodiversity through sustainable planting on farms, orchards, and private lands, we support local economies while protecting soil health. Our approach honors traditional farming practices and empowers communities to thrive in harmony with nature

Our project began in 2020 with the goal of delivering 10,000 fruit tree saplings for planting in land close to the schools rebuilt by The Juniper Trust after the 2015 earthquake. Local residents actively joined the effort, committing to care for the trees to benefit the schools and their communities.

Between 2021 and 2024, Nepal Evergreen expanded efforts, delivering 30,000 additional fruit and native tree saplings, including lemon, apple, mandarin, peach, walnut, plum, almond, avocado, pecan, Sichuan pepper, lapsi, lychee, and kiwi. Bamboo and lokta (for traditional papermaking) were introduced, along with 15,000 tea saplings and 3,000 walnut trees planted in Kinja Valley, supporting reforestation and enhancing the local economy.

In 2024, Nepal Evergreen celebrated its first harvest of kiwis, lemons, oranges, and avocados—a milestone for our organization and local communities. Beyond planting, we help villagers sell their produce in local markets, providing income from fruit cultivation and fresh produce to their communities. Our goal is to enhance village financial sustainability through community-led agriculture.

In 2025, marking our 6th year of tree planting, we aim to reach the milestone of planting 60,000 fruit trees, 15,000 tea saplings, and 10,000 bamboo bundles, with hopes to exceed this goal if we can raise the necessary funds. This achievement signifies our progress towards our overarching target of 100,000 trees.

In 2025, we are proud to announce a collaboration with ONCRA (Organic Carbon Research Association), a leader in carbon testing and organic farming research. Drawing on ONCRA’s expertise in soil carbon assessment, we aim to enhance sustainable agriculture and improve carbon sequestration in rural Nepal.
