Story

Nepal Evergreen, a volunteer-run initiative, is dedicated to planting a diverse range of trees and plants in impoverished rural regions of Nepal. Our primary focus is not only on benefiting natural habitats but also on creating economic opportunities for local communities through farms, orchards, and private lands.

In addition to these efforts, we recognize the significant impact of tourism on carbon emissions, especially by flights to and from Nepal. A single economy seat can produce as much as 3-4 tonnes of CO2 gases during both flights. By planting fruit trees and other species such as bamboo and Lokta, we actively contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint generated by tourism, which Nepal desperately needs. This approach fosters resilience, ecological stability, and long-term sustainability for both the environment and the tourism sector, ensuring a brighter future for Nepal and the planet as a whole.

Our project began in 2020 with the goal of planting fruit trees close to the schools rebuilt by The Juniper Trust since the 2015 earthquake. Local residents actively participated in the planting and offered to maintain the fruit trees for the benefit of the schools. To ensure cost-efficiency, we purchase young saplings in bulk, nurturing them for six months in nurseries located in the Kathmandu Valley. Within four days of leaving the nurseries, the saplings are transported to the mountains for planting.

For the first two years, 2021 and 2022, we successfully delivered over 15,000 saplings to local communities, including Lemon, Apple, Mandarin, Peach, Walnut, Plum, Almond, Avocado, Pecan, Sichuan Pepper, Lapsi, and Lychee varieties. Additionally, we provided support in procuring 3,000 saplings of Nepalese Alder and Pine trees from the local forest for planting in other sites. In 2023, we initiated projects involving Bamboo, Lokta (used in papermaking), and planted over 5,000 tea saplings and 2,000 Walnut trees in the Kinja Valley to regenerate parts of the area affected by a new hydro project, restoring the once forested areas now turned into dry lands.

In Nepal Evergreen's fourth year, 2024, we have an ambitious target of planting over 10,000 fruit trees and other species at 12 planting sites across Nepal: six in the Solu Khumbu, three in Nuwakot District, and three in the Kinja Valley. You can view and track progress at all of these planting sites by visiting our website at www.nepal-evergreen.org

Nepal Evergreen, a project organized by the volunteer-based Juniper Trust, operates with zero overheads or costs, ensuring that 100% of your donation goes directly to the project. Our goal is to plant 100,000 fruit trees in Nepal, which will absorb up to 25,000 tons of CO2 gases during their lifespan.

With a donation of just $20, you can potentially offset 5 tons of carbon throughout the lifetime of our project.

A fully mature fruit tree will absorb a minimum of 10kg of CO2 gas per year throughout an average lifespan of 25 years, with some trees living much longer.

One hundred fully mature fruit trees will absorb 1 ton of carbon dioxide in a year, potentially capturing 25 tonnes of future CO2 emissions.

Support Nepal Evergreen to offset your carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Thank you , every donation helps, no matter how small.
