Why 137?

One in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime, and 137 women are killed per day by a partner or family member.

How your support can help

Across the world, women and girls are fighting to claim their rights and change the systems and beliefs that make violence acceptable. ActionAid is working with communities to prevent and respond to violence and create long-term change. Your support could help survivors seek justice and fund women's groups who train parents, teachers, local police and legal advisors to recognise the signs of violence and report it.

Trigger warning: We are about to share with you Wangu's story about her experience of sexual violence, which you may find upsetting.

Wangu (pictured above) is the founder of the Wangu Kanja Foundation, which supports survivors of sexual abuse and works to prevent gender-based violence in Kenya. In 2002, Wangu was car-jacked and sexually assaulted in Nairobi. Not only did she have to deal with the trauma of the assault, but the police didn’t take her seriously when she tried to report it and her attackers were not brought to justice.

Wangu decided to stand up and use her experience to help other women. So, in 2005 she founded The Wangu Kanja Foundation, a partner of ActionAid, which helps survivors of violence access proper medical support, counselling and legal advice. The Wangu Kanja Foundation works with a team of volunteers and runs a free SMS service in the Mukuru slum in Nairobi, by which people in Mukuru, and across Kenya, can report cases of violence against them. Survivors are then helped to access essential services, such as fair treatment from the police, medical attention and legal assistance.
