Story
We are specialists in Trauma Recovery, helping families recover from complex trauma. We support them as they piece their lives back together until a wholeness can be found.
Who we are:
Our Charity was Founded in 2011 by international specialist in complex trauma recovery, Betsy de Thierry. Our ongoing mission is to help children, young people, young adults aged 3-24 years, and parents/carers recover from the impact of multiple and complex trauma.
Since Trauma Recovery UK started in 2011, we have helped over 1,500 clients and delivered over 28,000 hours of face-to-face interventions to support children, young people and their families, through our Trauma Recovery Centres.

How we help:
Trauma can be defined as “any experience or repeated experience where the person feels terrified, powerless and overwhelmed, to the extent that it challenges their capacity to cope. It can leave an imprint on the person’s nervous system, emotions, body, behaviours, learning and relationships”. de Thierry (2021).p15 ©. We therefore recognise that the experience of trauma and consequential trauma symptoms usually have a long term psychological, social, and physical impact which can also have a detrimental impact on the child’s ability to learn and engage in education and reach their potential, family relationships and confidence in parenting.
We support children and young people with Creative Psychotherapy and Therapeutic Mentoring, provided by TRC Team who are trained in using the Trauma Recovery Focused Model®, which is licensed from Trauma Recovery Global, our partner organisation. Their parents/carers are also supported through a specialist psychoeducation course called ‘Trauma Recovery Global Parenting Course' which is also part of the TRFM® model.
Within this Clinical Model, we provide holistic, bespoke support in the following ways:
• 1:1 Trauma Recovery Focused therapy sessions to help children & young people creatively process multiple and complex trauma experiences, this helps them move from psychological shock through to recovery, reducing the multi-faceted impact of trauma.
• Therapeutic Parent/Carer Groups to help those with young people aged 16 years and under to provide holistic inter-generational support at the same time as their child’s session.
• Therapeutic Mentoring through 1:1 sessions and groups, for children, young people and parents/carers. These sessions support in building the foundation safety and stability, which is essential for trauma recovery.
Our aim is to effect long term change by working with subconscious and non-verbal processes to see transformation and recovery. Trauma is stored in the subconscious of the child’s brain, and therefore we employ qualified professionals trained to work safely with the subconscious using creativity. We know that creative therapies bypass the cognitive and allows the brain to process these scary or painful emotions and memories in a safe way.
