Story
For more than 150 years, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte has been so much more than a gym. Our centers are connection points and building blocks in our neighborhoods. They are hubs for youth development and a safe place for families and teens. Our camps are foundational for character growth and independence. But we need your help to continue to offer the resources that provide a stronger foundation and a brighter future for all.
Did you know?
* More than 1,100 struggling readers grades PreK-3rd were supported through our Y Readers summer and after school program at no cost to their families over the past year. It’s a more than $1.7 million investment in future generations made possible because of people like you. The Y is committed to closing the education and literacy gap for these students and the impact is clear. Last year, more than 86% of students improved or maintained their literacy classifications, and we are on track for another year of impact.
* More than 1,200 children were taught lifesaving skills around water at no cost to their families last year. In addition, more than 12,200 affordable swim lessons were given at the Y, actively working to change the statistic that drowning is both the leading (ages 1-4) and second leading (ages 5-9) cause of death in children.
* More than 7,600 kids participated in summer day camps through the YMCA of Greater Charlotte in 2024. We provided over $750,000 in scholarships to families in need of financial assistance. Not only is this a safe space for children that allows parents to work during the summer, but it’s a place of growth and opportunity.
* More than 5,000 children and teens participated in residential camps which foster a child’s character development and grow independence. Last year we provided nearly $1 million in scholarships to our resident campers.
* Over 700 teens had access to a safe environment and learned crucial life skills through our teen programming. From college campus tours to mental health retreats, these teens are also being equipped for college and/or the workforce through various resources.
* More than 850 children were served through our Afterschool programming in 2024. The Y provided more than $350,000 in scholarships to families, ensuring youth had access to safe and enriching childcare during out of school hours.
* Over 500 people participated in adaptive and accessible programming like water skiing, dance team, cheerleading, swim lessons, basketball and Miracle League baseball in 2024. The Y is one of the few places where programs like this are offered. It will always be about giving opportunities that provide a brighter future for all.
While there are countless other ways the YMCA of Greater Charlotte invests in our youth and our greater community, we want you to be assured that your gift and support today will make an immediate impact in the lives of thousands of youth, teens and families across our area!
