Help Us Break Down Barriers for Deaf People in Cumbria
Since 1894, Cumbria Deaf Association has been standing alongside Deaf people across our county — championing equality, independence and understanding. For over 130 years, we’ve worked to ensure that being Deaf is never a barrier to living a full and connected life.
But access doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because support is there when it’s needed most.
Right now, we are raising £2,026 by Deaf Awareness Week (4–10 May 2026) to help fund vital services for Deaf people and their families across Cumbria.
Why This Matters
Imagine sitting in a hospital appointment and not being able to fully understand what’s being said about your health.
Imagine trying to access public services, attend parents’ evenings, apply for jobs, or simply feel part of your local community — without clear communication.
For many Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, these barriers are a daily reality.
That’s where Cumbria Deaf Association steps in.
What Your Donation Could Do
£2,026 could fund:
- 50 hours of professional British Sign Language interpreting, ensuring equal access to medical appointments, legal services, education and more.
- 81 hours of specialist support work, helping Deaf individuals stay independent, connected and confident in their communities.
- 13 Deaf Awareness sessions, supporting local businesses and organisations to become more inclusive and accessible.
Our interpreting services are particularly vital in medical settings, where clear communication can directly affect someone’s health, safety and wellbeing.
Our support workers provide practical and communication support, helping Deaf residents stay connected to their communities and maintain independence.
Our Deaf Awareness training helps local organisations understand the challenges Deaf people face — creating lasting change across Cumbria.
