The Fox Foodbank

In 2025, we rescued more than 1,500 sick, injured, or orphaned foxes, including over 450 cubs. The costs of treating and caring for them to release back into the wild are substantial, with food representing one of the largest expenses.

We are a specialist ambulance service, wildlife hospital and cub rehabilitation organisation providing help for sick, injured or orphaned foxes; a science-based wildlife information bureau; and pioneers in humane, non-lethal fox deterrence for situations where human and animal interests conflict.

Story

At The Fox Project, we rescue sick, injured, and orphaned foxes, rehabilitate them with expert care, and, when they’re ready, release them back to the wild.

Our Fox Foodbank is a lifeline at every stage of that journey — providing the nutrition that fuels healing, supports growth, and helps foxes reclaim a life in the wild.

Each year, our work continues to grow, and so does the need for consistent, high-quality nutrition.  By the end of this year we will have rehabilitated and released over 500 adults and 250 cubs, each with a unique story and a shared goal: to return to the wild as healthy, thriving individuals, and we expect to exceed that number during 2026.

Each day, life in our hospital unfolds with quiet dedication. Adults arrive with injuries or illnesses and stay for a week to a month, depending on their needs. They are fed twice daily with a carefully balanced menu that includes raw meat, cooked meat, tinned dog food, fruits, and a touch of cake. The cake isn’t a treat alone—it helps with medication absorption and satisfies their natural sweet tooth, supporting overall well-being. Our veterinary team tailors each plan to support healing, manage pain and promote recovery.

Cubs begin their journey from rescue, sometimes at just a day old, from spring through to the dispersal season when they’re ready to explore life back in the wild. Their growth is rapid and demanding. In the earliest days, they may be bottle-fed canine puppy milk every few hours; as they grow, their meals expand to include wet puppy food, dry kibble, cooked chicken, fruits, vegetables, and herbs, eaten two to three times daily and adjusted to age and development. The diets are chosen with care by our veterinary team to ensure optimal recovery, robust growth, and the best possible chance of reintegration into the wild.

Your support for the Fox Foodbank is vital. Consistent nutrition shortens recovery times, supports healing, and improves outcomes. Many of our sick patients begin with prescription, high-nutrient meals to kickstart healing and boost immunity. As rescue numbers increase, so too does the need for specialised diets, supplements, medications, and enrichment to encourage natural behaviours.

Your gift makes a real difference. It funds emergency and ongoing food supplies, veterinary-approved diets for the sickest patients, supplements, treats, and enrichment items.
