The first day of school marks a fresh start for many, but for a young person with speech and language challenges, going back to school can be a scary, overwhelming and isolating experience. Siouxsie, one of the young people we support, told us:
I have no friends. I feel that nobody is like me at school. I feel very different. I do not have the confidence to communicate with peers.”
Imagine being a young person with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), just like Siouxsie. Meeting new teachers who are unaware of your challenges and how to help you can be an anxious time.
I feel like teachers don’t understand me and therefore don’t know how to help me.”
Worrying about being unfairly punished for not following instructions you don’t understand, should not be how a child feels starting their new class.
Join us this International Day of Charity and give £5 to support the 1 in 5 children in the UK with speech and language challenges who urgently need help.
