It is estimated that more than 33,500 people in Somerset aged 65 or over live on their own and some report relying on their pets or television for the feeling of having company.
Reaching an older age is something to celebrate and yet it comes with challenges too. We have reached our 75th Anniversary at a very challenging time for older people. First covid and lockdowns have knocked older people for six in terms of losing confidence, reduced fitness and feeling less connected with their communities and friends. In addition to that we've started 2023 with worries about the cost of living and crippling electricity and fuel prices all on top of existing concerns about health, finances and loneliness and sorrow often brought about through bereavement.
Somerset has a larger population of older people than most places in the UK. It is without doubt a beautiful part of the world to live in, but our large rural areas and lack of public transport make the issues of loneliness and isolation worse.
NOW MORE THAN EVER, WE NEED YOUR HELP.
At Age UK Somerset our aim continues to be to ensure that every local older person has the opportunity to enjoy their later years. With the support of our team of wonderful Volunteers, we work to combat loneliness through a range of services and activities, such as our Wellbeing Friends, Walk and Talk and Friendly Phone Calls services as well as through our weekly group exercise sessions.
We want to continue our work supporting any older people that need us in Somerset and North Somerset so that they are given the opportunity to make the most of their later years free from loneliness and worry but we need your help.
We know times are hard at the moment but if you'd like to know that we will be here to offer a helping hand to your older relatives and friends; or even if you feel lucky because you have a good life and you don't need to turn to anyone for help; please, if you can afford it, could you make a small contribution so we can continue to help making later life better for those that do need us the most?
