828 Cycle Challenge 2026

Campaign by Head for Change

The 828 Cycle Challenge was created to honour former players, support families living with sports-related dementia or probable CTE, and make sport safer for future generations.

Closes 13/03/2026

Our goal is to create a safe space for our sporting heroes, past, present and future that suffer from sports-related brain injuries and connect with the best brains in science and research to make positive change.

Story

Alix Popham is a retired international rugby player. He won 33 caps for Wales and played in two World Cups (2003 and 2007). In 2008, he was a Grand Slam winner. Alix retired from professional rugby in 2011. In April 2020, he was diagnosed with probable CTE and early-onset dementia as a result of traumatic brain injury sustained in his rugby career.

With little support available, Alix and his wife, Mel Bramwell-Popham, decided to do something positive about the sport they still love but want to make safer. Head for Change was founded to create a world where sport is as good for your brain as it is for your body, and to support former players who are affected by neurodegenerative disease as a result of playing football or rugby.

The 828 Cycle Challenge continues that mission, turning collective action into real support and raising awareness to protect future generations.

On 16–17 January 2026, fourteen teams will take on a 24-hour endurance cycle at the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales to raise vital funds for Head for Change.

This challenge isn’t just about stamina. It’s about standing with the players, families, and communities affected by the long-term impact of head injury in sport.

Recent losses in the rugby community bring home just how vulnerable many former players feel, both physically and mentally. The need for meaningful support has never been more urgent.

Funds raised through the 828 Cycle Challenge will support our work to:

💙 Provide care and support to former players and their families.

💙 Drive research into safer sports practices and brain health.

💙 Educate clubs, schools, and communities on playing sport safely.

Whether you’re cycling, shouting from the sidelines, or supporting a team, you’re helping us to pioneer positive change for brain health in sport.

Every lap matters. Every pound helps. Thank you for being part of the solution.
