Jamie is eleven. He lives with his mum and brother near Hastings. He loves dogs and going to the beach. But Jamie’s days don’t start with play - they start with responsibility.
At 6am he gets up. He makes breakfast, puts a wash on, and plays snap with his brother. He helps his mum take a shower. Then, he leaves for school.
Jamie is a young carer - one of almost 8,000 young carers in East Sussex alone. For children like Jamie, summer doesn’t mean a carefree holiday. It means continuing to care for loved ones, every day, while their friends enjoy the break.
Can you give a young carer like Jamie ninety minutes to be a child?
"Before Young Carers Club, I didn’t go out much. Now I have friends who understand, and we always have fun, even if it’s been a hard day."
Care for the Carers runs Young Carers Clubs in Eastbourne, Bexhill, and Uckfield, offering young carers a space to relax, play, and build friendships with others who understand their experiences. For three years, Jamie has attended these sessions, transforming from a quiet, withdrawn child into a confident, energetic young person.
Can you be a Young Carers Hero? Your efforts and kindness will make a real difference to young carers across East Sussex.
Each monthly session lasts just ninety minutes, but the impact is life changing. Young carers like Jamie get a chance to play sports, enjoy cooking classes, and simply be children. With the school holidays approaching, this respite is more vital than ever.
Help keep Young Carers Club running - help children like Jamie.
