Every child needs and deserves to grow up in a family that loves and cares for them. Never alone in an orphanage that exposes them to neglect and abuse.

Hope and Homes for Children is an international charity that works to stop the institutionalisation of children. They fight for every child to feel the love and belonging of a safe family home.

The world doesn't need orphanages. They harm children and they harm society. And shockingly, 8 out of 10 children in orphanages have family members who would care for them but a broken system hoards money, makes false promises, and keeps children neglected and families exploited.

Over 5.4 million children are trapped within institutions. Many of these children have families who could look after them, if they had the right support.

Since the beginning of Russias invasion of Ukraine, Hope and Homes for Children has continued carrying out its vital work across Ukraine, Moldova and Romania. We are deeply concerned for the 100,000 children warehoused in Ukraines orphanage system. Orphanage buildings have been targeted by shells, missiles and illegal cluster bombs. As fighting continues, the staff in these institutions are fleeing. Large numbers of children have been left to face the dangers of war, alone.

This brutal invasion of Ukraine is not only exposing children and families to unimaginable harm right now but will continue to do so for years to come. We must act now to avert a child protection emergency across Eastern Europe.
