Story

There are 3.1 million Black people in the UK, and they are underrepresented in the sport of trail running.

Since 2020 Black Trail Runners - a community and campaigning charity with the mission to increase inclusion, participation and representation of Black people in trail running - has been working tirelessly to create true diversity on the trails.

And this year you can help us do that by taking on the Black Trail Runners 3.1 Challenge.

The Black Trail Runners 3.1 Challenge aims to highlight the importance of diversity in trail running.

Between 1st and 31st August 2022 we want our community (Black trail runners and white allies) to collectively complete 3.1 million miles of real life or virtual trail running (or walking - you don't have to run!).

We have partnered with Strava on this challenge but - whether you use the platform or not - we want to encourage you to get involved.

At the end of August - or during the month if you want to - let us know how your mileage is building by sending us an image or video via our Instagram Page. We'll then share it with our community.

And, if you feel so inclined, leave us a donation of £3.10 via this page (or even more if you want to!). Your donation means that, throughout 2022/2023 we, as a charity, will be able to continue our work to increase inclusion, participation and representation of Black people in trail running.

See our case studies below to see how the funds raised during the 2021 BTR 4.5 Challenge were allocated and used.

Together we can create a truly diverse trail running community!

Black Trail Runners

Since its launch in 2020 Black Trail Runners has achieved some epic milestones to deliver on its mission. Its charitable funds continue to drive its vision and to ensure Black and Brown people are represented on the trails.

Campaigning is what Black Trail Runners does well not only in action but through its national presence and sharing success and experiences of Black people on the trails. Its website, social media channels and The Checkpoint podcast are important parts of this communication and the charity has worked hard to establish and widen reach due to dedicating funds to website hosting, development and purchasing of equipment to enable communication to a wide variety of audiences.

Another ongoing success is the regular Black Trail Runners Trail Taster Days, where BTR community members come together in different parts of the country to share a day of trail running and learn new outdoor skills such as kit selection, navigation and trail running technique skills.

BTR is also keen to encourage young people and children particularly those in big cities to explore the trails. Through its charitable funds, BTR were proud to support two organisations The Outrunners and Trailfam.

BTR is able to access different opportunities to highlight its mission and achieve its vision. Partnering with Girls on Hills , Inov-8 and The Running Channel, in 2021 six BTR community members took on a multi-day challenge to tackle the Ramsay Round, one of the big three UK mountain rounds, conceived by a Black Scottish Mountain runner called Charlie Ramsay. This was one of the charities biggest projects to highlight the importance diverse communities participation and representation in trail running. Through charitable funds, they were able to support members with accommodation and travel, as well as the ability to track them on this challenge anddocumenting their epic journey through professional photography. Other opportunities where we used our funds include five BTR members taking part in the 2022 Speed Project, a 340-mile relay from Los Angeles to Las Vegas!

In September 2022, BTR are proud to launch its first ever trail event featuring 1km, 5km or 10km. Black to the Trails is an inclusive run event for EVERYONE regardless of their ability. BTR has worked hard to secure partner organisations and we are proud that this will be UKs FIRST ever trail running event designed, directed and run by Black Trail Runners for Black people, people of colour, and white allies who want to do their bit to diversify the UK trail running scene. Our charitable funds will help deliver this trailblazing event, and intend to make it bigger and better in future.

The Outrunners

Tyler Williams-Green founded The Outrunners a Hackney based running club in 2015 after developing a passion for running and, due to this, deciding to train as a certified running coach.

An experienced youth practitioner with over 17 years experience in the charity sector, Tyler saw that, as the running club grew, there was an opportunity to embed it within the community and, in doing so, create opportunities for runners to use their energy, experience and network to help support young people.

In 2020, The Outrunners Charity was incorporated. The vision being to create an equal Hackney where everyone is included and no-one is left behind. The charity believes that, by bringing people together to improve their fitness, they can use the power of this collective energy to widen the possibilities for young people in Hackney.

Outrunners Youth is one of the charity's programmes. It consists of weekly running sessions for 7 to 18-year-olds. These sessions often build up to events and races like the Vitality Big Mile and their own event - The Outrunners Fun Run. This programme is run in partnership with local youth clubs to provide more support and lend expertise to under-resourced organisations.

Black Trail Runners wanted to support the work of the charity and the youth programme in particular as we believe in using trail running as a conduit to developing the same life skills as this programme nurtures: teamwork, confidence, and communication.

A third of the money raised during the Black Trail Runners 2021 4.5 Challenge was donated to The Outrunners.

Says Tyler Williams-Green: The donation The Outrunners received was incredibly valuable in funding our Outrunners youth running clubs across Hackney for 7- to 18-year-olds. The money went towards kit for the young people and refreshments for during the sessions.

The outrunners future plans are all about scaling up and moving from being a Hackney charity to an east London charity. To do this, we will be hiring a volunteer coordinator who will start doing outreach in tower hamlets and Newham.
