Story

Help The Baby Elephants Team raise money for Kasanka National Park through The Elephant Charge

We are competing in an event called The Elephant Charge to raise money for Kasanka National Park. In the 11 year history of the event, we are the first ever team to enter in which every member is under the age of 17, ranging from 13-16. We are hoping to raise 10000 pounds to go towards anti poaching and environmental education in Kasanka

Help The Baby Elephants Team raise money in the Elephant Charge Challenge We are a team of committed young conservationists determined to take a stand and help turn the tide of environmental degradation that our generation has inherited!

To raise awareness of these challenges and engage our upcoming generation, we have formed a team of under 18s (with one adult driver) to enter the Elephant Charge Off-road Driving Event on 29th September 2018. This event involves navigating a 4 x 4 vehicle through the African Bush, up and down hills, through rivers, passing a series of checkpoints in the shortest possible distance. Its a tough test of teamwork, navigation, map reading, determination and 4x4 skills, pitching ourselves against 29 teams of adults.

The purpose of this event is to raise much needed funding for conservation in Zambia. The funds that we raise will go to Kasanka Trust Limited, a registered charity that manages the Kasanka National Park, one of the official recipients of Elephant Charge funding. The prime focus of the funds raised will go towards their Environmental Education programme, as well as assist in supporting other aspects of their conservation work.

Environmental Education is extremely important for Zambians as there many communities living along the boundary of these parks but are unable to visit and experience the wildlife and other resources that tourists will travel thousands of kilometres to see. Every member in this team has been fortunate enough to visit, and in some cases, actually live in a national park. The same can not be said for most Zambians our age. This lack of exposure to Zambias natural beauty has led to a major disconnect between the communities and the national parks. Imagine living next to a national park, but you have never seen an elephant or a lion outside of pictures. This disconnect and lack of exposure has resulted in increasing poaching numbers. The communities dont always realize that when poaching increases, there are fewer animals which leads to less tourism and less money going into the local economies. Not only that, but new generations are at risk of losing the opportunities to see these beautiful rare and endangered animals for themselves. This potential future can be stopped.

We need to educate these communities, as the heart of conservation lies with the people that are living with the animals we are trying to protect. Without their assistance and support, we cannot succeed. The Elephant Charge does more than just support the Environmental Education programmes that people of all ages in and around national parks can partake in. They also support national parks with other ways of preserving animals and conservation such as: anti-poaching, environmental education and rehabilitation of orphaned animals in particular elephants Please help the future of Zambian conservation and donate and share.

By donating through this site, UK taxpayers can further contribute their support by having the income tax on their donations refunded to Kasanka Trust Ltd.

Please support our appeal, bydoing so you can be assured that your donation is not only going directly to Kasanka Trust Ltd, but it also gives massive encouragement to the next generation of conservationists gearing up to face the challenges which lies ahead.

We want to put the adults to shame and prove that we have the passion and drive to improve conservation in Zambia. Please help us raise the most money and awareness compared to every other team that is competing against us by sharing and donating!
