The St. Johnstone Community Trust use the power and widespread appeal of football to build stronger communities through sport, education and wellbeing to develop healthier, happier, and successful people.

Story

Throughout December, for the second year running (!) Bertha Park pupils, staff and family members will each run between 20 and 150 miles to raise funds for the Bertha Saints Football Academy programme as part of the 'December Mileage Challenge'. With a total of 60 runners taking part, we aim to complete a combined total of 2,500 miles during this epic running challenge!! All funds raised will go towards the current target of £3,000 to help extend the Bertha Saints Football Academy programme beyond April 2022.

In July 2020, Bertha Park and Saints in the Community successfully raised £3,000 through the Aviva Community Fund crowdfunding programme. With great thanks to Aviva and our supporters, the funds raised allowed the Bertha Saints Football Academy project to get off the ground and provide a unique way for pupils to experience a supported transition from lock-down into returning to school education

Coming from a small school, this programme has allowed my son to quickly make new friends who have similar interests - it immediately gave him enthusiasm for starting at Bertha Park. This was despite the difficult Covid restrictions and missing transition days. He has very much enjoyed the coaching from Saints and is loving school.

Each week, participating pupils receive two 80-minute sessions with former St Johnstone and international player, Danny Griffin. Danny is the Club & Community Development Officer for Saints in the Community and is an experienced coach qualified to UEFA B and Elite Youth A licence level. The coaching team for Bertha Saints aim to create a vibrant and effective learning environment, inspiring young people to develop and achieve their potential - improved football player, improved person, improved school grades.

Fantastic football training and opportunities, Danny Griffin is excellent and we have seen such a difference in our child's confidence. I like how in Home Economics they were to make a healthier meal, learning about good food and nutrition is so important

Through this campaign, we now look to secure funds to allow us to plan ahead into year three and extend the Bertha Saints Football Academy project beyond April 2022 - engaging with more pupils, nurturing more talent, and creating a pathway of opportunities throughout school life for Bertha Saints pupils. We are now starting to take our programme to the next level with individual fitness suite training programmes and matches for our squads.

Unlike Dundee, and other local authorities, Perth & Kinross pupils do not have a local Scottish FA JD Performance School. Although the Scottish FA support our initiative, there is no funding to expand into Perth & Kinross at this time. However, we don't think this should limit the opportunities for local pupils.

The future of the Bertha Saints Football Academy project relies solely on us generating additional funds. Please help us to make these opportunities a reality beyond April 2021 for Bertha Park's current pupils, for those in our cluster area and, in future, for pupils across Perth & Kinross.

CORPORATE OPPORTUNITIES: We are looking for businesses to sponsor the programme to help us build sustainability. If you know of a company willing to back us annually between £1000-£5000 we would love to hear from you. This could have a huge impact on youth football in the Perth area.
