Story

Significance and role of the masjid in the Muslim community

The word masjid is mentioned in the Quran twenty-seven times: twenty-one times as the singular masjid, and six times as the plural masaajid. Both signify a place of prostrating a humbling position before Allah, and a vital part of salah. Hence, it is referred to as the House of Allah (bait Allah), a place where only Allah is worshipped and remembered.

The masjid represents the establishment of a Muslim community; it is the nucleus that creates characteristics of Muslim society. It is a vital cornerstone in the building of any Muslim community. Throughout Islamic history the masjid, as an institution, played a central role in the cultural and social lives of the Muslims. The masjid acted as a focal point of all activities based on the importance bestowed upon it by the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam during his lifetime and the life of his companions thereafter. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam first actions after emigrating from Makkah and arriving in Madinah, was to select a suitable location for a masjid and to organise its construction. Islam comprises a complete and comprehensive way of life, accordingly, the masjid, with its positive and constructive activities, is at the heart of the community.

A brief glance at some of the Prophetic ahadith will confirm the virtues of establishing a masjid, attending the masjid, spending time in it, and partaking in its activities all of which are acts of ibadah (worship) will demonstrate the lofty position of the masjid during the Prophets time.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, Whoever builds a masjid, Allah will build for him a similar place in paradise. (Bukhari)

Allah mentions in the Quraan: The mosques of Allah shall be visited and maintained by such as believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity, and fear none [at all] except Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance. (Al-Quran 9:18)
