Story

The sponsored walk will take place over 24 hours starting at 10:00 on Saturday 25th March 2023 and finishing by 10:00 on Sunday 26th March 2023. Cadets are asked to walk around the school 400m track to achieve the same distance as walking from Brakenhale School to John O Groats Via Snowdonia, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, totalling 800 miles or 1,287,472 meters. During the walk the cadets will also climb up and down steps which will equal the same as walking up each of the 3 national peaks, a total height of 3,408 meters. We are aiming for at least 50 cadets to take part in this event, which would require each cadet to walk our 400m track 64 times and climb a total of 401 steps over the 24-hour period.

The following is just a little about what Maj Brannigan has posted publicly about this daughters condition.

Hasti was born in December 2011. She was born underweight despite being born full term and there was no questioning that she looked different from other babies. We could sense from their first few moments with her in our arms, that all was not well with her. The day we received the diagnosis for CdLS was the beginning of the worst period of all our lives. The doctor told me a review of her genome confirmed she has the rare genetic syndrome CdLS, which is was characterized by a whole list of problems; cardiac, auditory, growth, memory, speech, language, mutism, seizures. The future isn't bright; Hasti has a rare form of this already rare disease, a dysfunctional HDAC8 gene discovered only a few years ago. As there are currently no treatments for CdLS, we have decided that we need to fight for that too. Hasti has been lucky and has made steady improvements but we don't know when the tide will turn for her. We are commissioning research into a gene therapy for CdLS that will benefit those currently suffering with this disease and the children who will receive the diagnosis in the future.

The event will be supported via national Army cadets social media and our own school social media.
