Story

It is our mission to share our collections, beautiful French architecture and landscaped park and gardens with as wide an audience as possible, but we cant do that without the support of people like you. After a period of four months closure, our Museum building is open, to limited numbers of visitors, socially distanced and with extra safety measures in place.

Whilst we manage to keep everyone safe inside the building, we are offering Teesdale residents and the wider community the opportunity to nurture their health and wellbeing through access to open space, woodland walks, outdoor eating and engagement with art. This summer we are Bringing the Museum into the Park through an outdoor exhibition displaying artworks created by young people and other local artists, open-air workshops and socially distanced cultural activities for all ages.

The Bowes Museum is a charity, and it is heavily dependent on visitor income and donations. With the loss of all our income from admissions, the Museum Shop and Café Bowes, for over four months, we are now in a vulnerable position and any help you can give, no matter how much, will help the Museum overcome the challenges it faces in the future. We are committed to creating a world in which creativity, art and the community in which we live are amongst the most important things in our society.

Your donations will provide health and safety measures which we need to introduce to keep you and our staff safe, outdoor displays of art by young people inspired by paintings in our collection, and artworks by local artists, many of whom will have lost much of their income through COVID-19. Help us give a much-needed boost to the mental and physical health of families, young people, the elderly and all those who live in Barnard Castle and those visiting Teesdale. Whether it be through walking round the woodland path, resting on a bench to take in a view of the gardens, enjoying a moment's reflection through looking at art or sharing conversations over a picnic, your support will help us make this happen, and share great art in beautiful surroundings with our community.

Every donation can make a big difference. Thank you!
