Story
Why we need your help:
CARE need your help to create a community space in Grimsby town centre. We are currently £80,000 away from reaching our target of making our dream a reality. With your support, we will create an invaluable community hub in the heart of Grimsby town, expanding CARE's services.
Our Vision:
To purchase a property on Victoria Street to create a community space in the heart of our town, bringing people together from all walks of life. A place where people can feel at home and connect with one another, and receive support and practical help.
Why do we need a community space?
Our current premises are too small, cramped, and with poor accessibility. To meet the needs of our community, we need a larger building that is well-located, well-designed, open-plan and large enough to allow for growth.
We have found the perfect place in the town centre: the old Royal Bank of Scotland building at 88 Victoria Street, Grimsby. We have put in an offer which has been accepted and we have a social investor on board willing to give the majority of the funds. But to complete the purchase we need to raise the final £80,000.
This building will be an amazing asset to the community creating a warm and inviting place in the heart of our town for people to wander in off the street and feel right at home. Whilst being able to access CAREs services, grab a refreshment and have a place to make friends.
Over the years, the demand for CARE's services has increased, and we want to provide shorter waiting time for clients; accessibility for people with disabilities; a comfortable waiting area/community space for clients to receive help filling in referral forms; private meeting rooms for 1:1 appointments with clients; a warm space during the colder months for people struggling; a space for community workshops to take place; and for friendships and connections within the community to blossom. We want to expand on CAREs life changing services, by buying a property that will meet these needs.
What will it bring to the town?
It will create a much-needed hub in the heart of our community. This iconic building will be re-purposed to provide an open-access, free and welcoming space for connection, support and growth. A place to generate pride, belonging and hope amongst diverse groups, build relationships, a place to learn, share and have a sense of purpose.
The opportunities it will create:
-New jobs
-New volunteering opportunities
-Expanding the accessibility to CARE services
-A place to make connections
-A warm space
-Community workshops
-Refreshments
-Room hire
Where is it located?
The building we are buying and renovating is formally known as the old Royal Bank of Scotland in the town centre. Positioning us directly next to the bus terminal, with Grimsby Central Library next door and the Post Office diagonally opposite. A perfect location for everyone in the community to be able to access.
What services do CARE already provide?
We run various projects including an innovative housing programme, crisis support, food pantry, drop-in, toy giveaway, and a furniture recycling shop. Located in Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham, supporting over 6000 people every year. We give holistic, practical support, as well as finding housing. We help people struggling with the most complex needs, including poverty, homelessness, debt, disability, illness, domestic abuse, care leavers, isolation amongst older people, victims of crime, and those in mental health crisis. Many of our staff and volunteers have lived experience of homelessness, which helps build relationships and trust.
The impact of CARE services:
Other services have closed doors in my face. CARE isnt textbook. They listen to the needs of people and do their very best to help. They have a different understanding of people's needs, they help with everything. Client
Another client said: Every time you come to see me, its like theres this wall in front of me and every visit you are taking a brick out of the wall and I can see a way forward and the light shining through.
One client shared: "CARE support saved my life."
Everyone at CARE has helped change the course of my life in the best way i could think possible and understanding me as a person and understanding what i want to achieve with my life is something i will forever be grateful for as you made me feel not so alone in this world. Client
"You are a beacon of hope out there in North East Lincolnshire. When talking about what we do for families she said, "it's such a legacy you left there, you're not in it for what you can get out of it, you're in it for what difference you can make in people's lives."- NELC Migration Lead
