Clare was the kindest, most insightful and caring person many of us have had the privilege to meet. She always made time to really listen to people, to engage with their issues and she persevered in her tenacious and gentle way to offer solutions to problems even if that was difficult to do. She has made a difference to so many people's lives and has supported her many friends' causes.
One of these is STEKA a children's home in Malawi run by Godknows Maseko and his wife Helen. Over the years Clare supported the creation of a Scottish charity, STEKAskills, to help deliver Godknows' vision of building a Centre for Vocational Skills and Community Enterprise. STEKAskills has created lifechanging opportunities for poverty experienced young people by building classrooms and funding training in skills such as tailoring, hairdressing and metal work.
But gender inequality and abuse have prevented a number of women from being able to complete this training. This can be solved by building a women's hostel where women can live safely together at the Centre and develop their confidence and ambition to gain the skills they need to sustain themselves and their families. Clare, a trustee of STEKAskills, was working on the launch of a campaign to fundraise for this right up until her death.
Every penny raised here will go towards creating Clare's Room at the centre of the hostel. Clare's Room will be a place where women can go to talk, share stories, food and prayers. Clare was at the heart of her own community and we can't think of a more fitting living tribute to her.
And Clare was the BEST company with an impish sense of humour. Malawi is the warm heart of Africa and we hope the women in Clare's Room will reflect her humour and her creativity as well as her warmth and genuine interest in others as they build their own solidarity and community.
