***** UPDATE*****
Final Push - over the next two days we will (finally) walk the last 35 ish miles of the Offa's Dyke Path
Completing this walk has been such a journey (literally and personally). I have enjoyed every step, thought of my Dad (who loved to walk) the whole way, and raised some money for our much needed food bank. In the time it has taken to complete this walk demand has risen from circa 20 food parcels a week to over 30 (nealy 50 some weeks).
With the furlough scheme closed, fuel prices rising, winter coming in, reductions in universal credit and inflation (prices) on the up its going to be a tough winter for many people.
If you have enough food in your house for more than 2-3 weeks please consider making a donation to our Food Bank - all the money we raise is spent on buying food.
We aim to help local people/families in a time of crisis - helping them get back on their feet when they need it most.
History of the walk - During Lockdown a friend and I kept ourselves sane by planning walks we could do when the restrictions lifted - this is the first one we are actually doing!
Lockdown has been hard on many people in many different ways, food hunger must be one of the hardest things for may - a concept that seems so alien to most of us living in the western world. However as the last 12 months has taught me many people right on our own doorsteps are struggling to feed themselves, their families and their pets. Life was tough for many before covid-19 hit, but it has got much harder. For those just getting by before it meant tight budgets became even tighter. For some sudden and dramatic changes in income meant facing situations they had not imagined.
Cleckheaton Food Bank has helped so many people this last 12 months, however the problem for lots of families are only just beginning. We want to continue to be here for as long as there is a need. In an ideal world there would be no food poverty - but our world if far from ideal - so until then we will continue to help people in need.
Inspired by my father - who sadly died in March 2021 - he loved to walk and he loved to help people - I want to complete this walk, remember him and help others.
We have had many (literal and personal) ups and downs over the course of this walk!
