Climate Action Strathaven are proud to support the Strathaven Community Fridge. This important project is helping to tackle climate change by redistributing food that would have gone to landfill. Our open door policy means that anyone can access the food, removing the stigma some people might face when accessing such a service.
Incredibly up to 30% of human caused greenhouse gases are as a result of our current food system. The energy and materials needed to produce chemicals for modern farming practices are huge. Fertilizer production alone consumes approximately 1.2% of the world's total energy on an annual basis! Add to this the large equipment required for intensive agriculture systems and you soon clock up more greenhouse gas emissions.
The drive for cheaper food only increases the need for intense farming methods, resulting in further damage to our ecosystems and massive loss of biodiversity. Chemicals used in intensive farming strip valuable nutrients from our soils. The result - a higher demand for fertilizers. It's a downward cycle.
If we lose both bacteria and fungi, then the soil degrades. Overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have effects on the soil organisms that are similar to human overuse of antibiotics. Indiscriminate use of chemicals might work for a few years, but after awhile, there aren't enough beneficial soil organisms to hold onto the nutrients - Dr. Elaine Ingham
By reducing food waste we reduce the amount of food that needs to be produced in the first place. Most families in the UK throw away around £700 worth of perfectly good food each year! By planning our meals and only buying what we need we can all help to reduce the demands our current food system places on our environment.
