Please join us to build a legacy for David at Loughborough, through the creation of the David Llewellyn Rugby Scholarship.
David studied Economics and Politics at Loughborough University from 1981 to 1984, where he captained the Freshers and played for the 1st XV rugby team and Loughborough Town. He previously captained the First XV at Dulwich College and Rosslyn Park Colts and also played for England Colts. After graduating, David went on to play for the Old Alleynian Football Club. He captained the OAs from 1986-1988 and they had great success. He married fellow Loughborough graduate Tracy Llewellyn (nee Murphy) and they had two daughters, Georgia and Hannah. Later in life David had his dream job running The Railway Bell with his lovely partner Mary.
David passed away in 2018 aged 56, and David's family and friends have come together to establish the David Llewellyn Rugby Scholarship at Loughborough, in his memory.
Our goal is to raise £25,000 for a scholarship fund in David's name. This fund will be used to provide the annual David Llewellyn Rugby Scholarship for top-tier rugby players coming to play and study at Loughborough, worth between £2,000 - £5,000.
This scholarship will mean the recipient can benefit from world-class rugby coaching and training at Loughborough, travel to fixtures, and meet their nutritional and rehabilitation needs, balancing the demands of being an elite athlete whilst studying for a degree at a UK top 10 university. The scholarship will be offered to the most worthy candidate as selected by Loughborough's Director of Rugby, and is open to both male or female players, undergraduate or post-graduate level of study. David believed very strongly in equality and on this basis his family have requested that preference be given to applicants from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and that individual circumstances such as financial need will be taken into account as well as rugby performance.
We hope that David's legacy will continue to help young people at Loughborough for many years to come!
David is survived by his parents, John & Audrey, both in their 90s and his brother Huw.
Thank you for your help in making the David Llewellyn Rugby Scholarship a reality.
