Every young person we support has complex physical needs. All use wheelchairs at least some of the time, struggle with fine motor skills like controlling a computer mouse and have limited verbal communication. These challenges can be extremely frustrating and isolating.
With Eyegaze technology, young people can use eye movement to control a computer screen, helping them to learn and communicate. However, we dont currently have enough to meet the needs of all our young people.
Providing Eyegaze computers in all our classrooms and residential bungalows will open up a world of opportunities for our young people, enabling them to take control of their computer screen using eye movement alone. With this empowering resource, they will be able to do anything that could usually be done by controlling a mouse and much more. This could include using online learning activities, sending a text message or even contolling a TV remote control.
"William is a really big fan of using the Eyegaze computer. Prior to coming here, he wasnt using a computer at all. Above all, he really enjoys the independence it gives him because for all the time he is here, he doesnt need to ask his support worker to do anything for him... Hes got his favourite game and hes put a lot of time and effort into mastering it. Hes now completed it and has the highest score of anyone who comes here and plays it."
