We are delighted to announce our latest project!
In collaboration with the SCI Foundation, we aim to improve access to prevention and treatment for female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) in Côte dIvoire.
FGS is a neglected condition that can lead to ectopic pregnancy, infertility and increased risk of HIV and HPV acquisition. Effective treatment exists, in the form of praziquantel. There are no routine services currently in place to effectively target women at risk.
This project will work with the Ministry of Health to develop an integrated model of care to prevent and treat FGS effectively. Initially at seven health centres in one district, these services will include a surveillance system and community outreach programmes for vulnerable, at risk women.
The condition remains largely unknown within Côte dIvoire, both within the population and amongst healthcare workers, therefore this project will also focus on addressing the stigma attached to FGS.
Following a successful pilot in 2021, we look forward to further success as the initiative is expanded across more districts to provide access to FGS prevention and treatment for 31,000 young women.
