Over the last six weeks, heavy rain and bad weather has raged through North-West Syria causing devastating floods. Many camps, houses and buildings were submerged under water and mud.
Our Prosthetic Limb Clinic was not spared. Rain, mud and dirt flooded the clinic's basement and with it the vital machinery used for manufacturing prosthetic limbs.
Finding appropriate buildings in Syria for this kind of work is challenging. Underground basements are sought after because of the protection they provide against bombing and airstrikes but cannot protect against a flash flood. The team are working hard with a group of technical experts to see what machinery can be salvaged and repaired, including the Robotic Arm. This key piece of equipment was purchased last year to double the number of Prosthetic Limbs the team are able to produce. They are also looking for a suitable building to relocate to which is still within reach of the many patients who rely on the clinic for treatment.
The total cost is estimated at USD$25,000. A£10,000 contribution from us will go a long way to getting this clinic back on its feet.
Hands Up is proud to have supported this project for the last five years. The Clinic treats around 140 patients a month and provides a life-line for hundreds of amputees whose lives have been immeasurably damaged by war or accident. The aim behind this project is to allow patients to regain dignity, pride and movement as well as go back to work. To see an example of the work they do watch Rayan's story .
£0.20 in every £1 donated will be used to cover the costs of this appeal, so £0.80 in each £1 will go towards the cost of repairs and relocation of the clinic.
