Story
New for 2019 is the GYRO. A fundraising cycle challenge in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). GYRO is an abbreviation of GNAAS yearly ride out but is a cunning play on words with connotations to the gyroscopic effect of both bicycles and helicopters and also to the famous Italian grand tour!
The ride is the brain child of a small group of doctors and paramedics from the North East of England, all of which are involved in the delivery of care to the sickest patients in the regions and who have seen first-hand the difference that a world class pre-hospital care service can make.
The Great North Air Ambulance is entirely charity funded and each year needs to raise in excess of 5 million pounds to continue providing lifesaving treatment. GYRO is billed as a base to base challenge and is an audacious attempt at linking the two air bases used by GNAAS to serve the people of the North East and Cumbria.
