Story

The aim of 'A Germ's Journey' is to raise awareness of health hygiene. Through fun and interactive education, we are teaching young children the importance of handwashing for their own health and well-being. Our mission is to make A Germ's Journey educational resources freely available at the point-of-access to children, educators, and healthcare workers around the world.

The project was founded by microbiologist, Prof Katie Laird, and educational specialist, Prof Sarah Younie and is supported by an interdisciplinary team of experts from a range of subjects, including microbiology, education, psychology, art and design, media and communications, and technology to develop unique interactive learning resources for young children across the world. Our resources are supported through extensive research, on location fieldwork, and co-created with international partners to ensure that they are culturally relevant and accessible.

So far, we have:

1) Increased understanding of germs, improved handwashing behaviour and reduced illness in children using the Germs Journey educational resources.

2)Donated 6000 books to 3 countries across 3 continents.

3)Reached nearly 200 00 individuals and 300 teachers through workshops.

4) Been accessed in 117 countries.

5) Created resources in 10 languages.

6) An exhibition at the Thinktank Science Museum Birmingham.

7) Published 4 books and research papers.

8) Hosted a Global News desk with interviewees from across the world.

9) Created a Bye Bye Germs online video activity series.

10) Participated in a webinar series hosted by the Department for International Trade (GOV UK)

This has all been made possible through grants, sponsors, and donations.
