The countdown to Christmas has officially begun. We are already surrounded by the sights and sounds of the festive season from brightly coloured decorations and flashing lights, to mince pies and singing.

Many children love this time of year. Everyone is busy making decorations to sell at Christmas Fairs, holding raffles, singing carols and preparing to take part in a performance in front of their family and friends. But the festive season can be a stressful and overwhelming time for children and young people with autism and for their families. Changes and the lack of structure can be very difficult for many children with autism. Every family is affected differently.

It can also be a lonely and isolating time for parents and carers. Parents often avoid social events & public places rather than face the reactions from people who do not understand the situation. This causes not only the child, but also their family to become socially restricted & isolated, which has a profound effect on their social and emotional wellbeing.

At this time of year, Huntly ASDitude is a lifeline for families bringing together young people with autism and their parents, so that they can share advice, support and friendship to help them feel more included and better supported.
