Story

Every day, 800 women die due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. The leading cause is severe bleeding during or after childbirth, a condition known as post-partum haemorrhage (PPH). Many of these deaths could be avoided with better access to effective medicines.

This is Nasma; she lives near Monrovia, the capital of Liberia in West Africa. When it was time for Nasma to give birth, she had to take an uncomfortable two-hour journey by auto-rickshaw to the hospital. The route was heavy with traffic, swelteringly hot and she was in a lot of pain. When Nasma arrived, she needed an emergency caesarean section, but after the operation, Nasma began bleeding heavily and needed immediate treatment to save her life. Thankfully, due to our recent shipment of medicines, Nasma was given blood-clotting medication to stop the haemorrhaging.

I had been bleeding heavily, they were able to treat me with medicine right after the surgery to make it stop. I was a little scared when I heard that, but I have come through it.

Without this medication, Nasma would have died. Now, she is a proud mother.

As well as supporting child and maternal health, IHP helps provide medicines for a broad range of conditions, from pain relief to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. Whilst many of these diseases affect both sexes, women are particularly at risk because they're less like to seek out healthcare due to limited access to finances, sociocultural factors such as traditional familial responsibilities, and even experiencing forms of violence. Support for this appeal means we can help more women access the healthcare they need and avoid preventable deaths and needless suffering.

Every donation to this appeal will be matched up to £10,000, doubling your impact. Please support IHP by donating now and supporting our BBC Radio 4 appeal.

Thank you so much for your support!
