Douglas C-47A Dakota repaint funding

After several years of display outside in all weathers, our 1944 C-47A Dakota KG651 is finally housed in a purpose built hangar at the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre. Now is the time to give her a deserved repaint and add to the story.

Story

This aircraft was delivered to the RAF in 1944 and served on 24 Sqn, which, carried out VIP flights. RAF Metheringham was primarily a Lancaster bomber base in WW2 but some USAAF C-47's did operate there transporting casualties to and from the nearby American military hospital at Nocton Hall.

The current paint finish has faded badly and we would like to repaint the Dakota in it's original military WW2 colour scheme of Dark Olive over Grey with RAF markings on the Starboard side to represent the history of this aircraft and USAAF markings on the Port side to represent the C-47's that operated through RAF Metheringham in WW2.

We have a funding offer to allow for the identity of the USAAF side to be specified by a single donation of £1,000, the serial number, any nose art or other identifying markings can be specified by the donor. The identity should be in keeping with WW2 USAAF C-47's and will stay on the aircraft for at least two years.

In addition to this specific funding we would like to appeal for smaller, individual donations to help with equipment and materials for the preparation and painting of KG651. The names of every donor of £10 or more will appear on a display board next to the C-47 when the repaint is completed, unless the donor wishes to remain anonymous.

This aircraft is open to visitors with access to the main fuselage and cockpit. Thank you for considering this appeal today.

Thanks to everyone who is donating. Please help us find that single £1,000 donation from either an individual or business who would like to see their own nose art on the port side of this aircraft. Wife's name? Business name? as long as it would fit in with the nose art of the time.

12th November 2022.

Painting has started for real and for updates and photos from time to time please visit the following link HERE

We are still looking for donations that help us source the scaffolding/safety equipment etc that will help us complete the painting...... and of course, that single large donation as described above.
