In 1866, Miss Catherine Scott, a British missionary came to Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon) and started the "Kollupitiya Girls English School". It was registered as a "Grant-in-Aid" English High School with 99 students in 1883. The school was recognised as a fully organised Secondary School and its name was changed to Methodist College in 1915.
In the years that followed this educational institution grew and many girls benefitted from the educational and extra-curricular activities offered.
In 1919 the alumni branch - Old Girls Association (OGA) was established in Sri Lanka and over the years it has expanded to sister branches in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada & USA.
With the support of its membership and well-wishers, the UK alumni - Methodist College Past Pupils Charitable Association (MCPPCA) have been supporting the special needs educational department within the school in Sri Lanka from its inception in 2015.
Some of the projects that MCPPCA (UK) have supported so far are:
1. Funding towards the services of a Special Needs Consultant.
2. Funding towards the services of a Speech Therapist to visit the school regularly.
3. Provision of online resources in conducting virtual lessons for students.
4. Provision of equipment and tools to facilitate teaching of students with special needs in a mainstream classroom.
MCPPCA (UK)s vision is to continue raising much needed funds to support the requirements of the Special Needs Education department for children at Methodist College, Colombo.
