Recovery is possible: An addict's story

A recovering alcoholic and survivor of childhood traumas, perspective on recovery. Matt takes you by the hand and walks with you through his Year one in recovery. Not as a therapist or a doctor but as a companion sharing his own intimate journey. Offering signposts and road maps that only those who have stood at the beginning of the road to recovery can understand. Matt shares his very personal gateway into addiction that stems from various childhood traumas.

These life-shattering experiences include abandonment, years of sexual abuse as a child at the hands of a predator and an unprovoked attack at the age of thirteen that nearly killed him. Finally, the loss of a child sealed his gateway into years of alcoholism drug addiction and substance misuse.

Matt decided to go into recovery very publicly via his Facebook page that has now amassed a huge worldwide following. Recovery is possible: An addict's story was written as part of his recovery project, to share the methods and techniques he used to aid in his recovery and also as a means to raise awareness for those suffering addiction and survivors of childhood trauma.

**TRIGGER WARNING** Please be aware Matt's story does contain violence and he recounts the experiences of the sexual abuse he endured as a child.

Matt was raised by his nan and grandad in Kent and he now lives with his partner and son in Burton Upon Trent. He had struggled with alcoholism and other forms of drug addiction his whole life. Trying time and time again to quit through various different means but unable to break free from the cycle of addiction. Matt had moved out of his family home as his alcohol problem was increasing.

When his nan died, a devastating time where he was alone, hungover and in a lockdown, Matt remembered her saying to him throughout his life growing up "Don't use me as an excuse to get drunk when I die." This was the push Matt needed to begin this journey of recovery and change. He got strategic and called this attacking his problem. During the first 76 days, Matt lost his nan, dad and uncle, but still managed to remain sober. He accounts this to developing a mindset that would give him back control over his choices along with, at times sheer grit and determination.

In this book, Matt shares with you what he did and how he did it without all the jargon of a counsellor or therapist. Dealing with triggers and cravings, other people, setting goals and intentions. He shares activities he did during trigger times and encourages you to seek out your own interests and hobbies to help get you through.

He discusses the importance of talking and reaching out for support and also lets you into his own personal feelings and thoughts on his traumatic experiences growing up. He calls these reflections of a broken mirror and hopes to raise awareness of the fact that addicts are some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

Through sharing his gateways into addiction, he shows us that nobody chooses to become an alcoholic and that we should learn what led someone to that point before we point the finger and judge. Please be aware Matt is a high functioning alcoholic with a psychological addiction. If you are considering giving up alcohol or any other form of drug it is strongly advised you seek help from your GP or another medical practitioner. We are all different and for those with a physical addiction just stopping can be dangerous and may require a medical detox.

"If your going to do something be prepared to go all the way. There will be struggles and at times you may fall. It is in those moments when we learn how to pick ourselves up. When we prove to ourselves that we are stronger than we thought and show the world what courage, determination and consistency can accomplish!"
