Story

The hardest thing to go through life is losing a loved one. This has been made even more difficult due to the pandemic. The reality for many was not being able to be close to those they love in their final moments. Since the pandemic started, 646 lives have been lost to date in Luton as result of Covid-19. The expectation is this number will continue to increase.

Many families and friends could not say goodbye to their loved one which has made the grieving process even more difficult. The Peace Garden Initiative is about supporting families in the bereavement process through helping them plant a tree as a way of doing something good for the environment in the memory of a loved one. It is also about supporting families cope with the collateral trauma caused by Covid-19 through people coming together with others that have lost loved ones and doing something positive.

The plan is to start planting trees this winter at a local park and subsequently early part of next year at other parks around the town. The approximate cost for planting a tree is £50. Families who wish to be involved in planting a tree can leave their details on the google form and the team will get in touch. Whether you have lost a loved one or not, all donation are welcome and will go towards planting trees of all those that have passed away as result of Covid-19 in Luton.

The following organisation are supporting this initiative: Luton Council of Faiths, Luton Councils of Mosques, Luton Borough Council, Churches Together in Luton, Sunni Council of Mosques, Grassroots, Discover Islam Luton, Raise Up Foundation, Community Interest Luton and iCare.
