"The world of Pictologue is full of wonder - wonder for the children in the fascinating activities that the staff do with them, and wonder for the parents in the transformation they witness in their children gradually with their help."
The expression of needs, wants and preferences is vital; the look of understanding is priceless; the ability to share something with someone is the foundation of all relationships. This is the essence of communication and yet for many, it is a confusing and closed door.
Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) are some of the most common childhood disabilities with around one in ten presenting with an SLCN. Some SLCN are short term and can be addressed through effective early intervention. Others are more permanent and will remain with the person throughout their childhood and adult life. 7% of children at five years of age have specific speech and language impairment and a further 1.8% have SLCN linked to other conditions such as learning disability, cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorders. A further group of children present with SLCN associated with environmental or demographic factors (e.g. English as an Additional Language; social deprivation).
Children and young people who have undetected SLCN are at greater risk of exclusion from school and it is thought that up to 90% of young offenders have communication difficulties. 33% of children with untreated speech and language difficulties will develop subsequent mental health problems and approximately 80% of children with emotional and behavioural disorders have significant language deficits.
