Roof-us is asking for your support to save an important community resource

Sampford Courtenay Village Hall was a school until the early 1950s. When the school closed it was purchased by a group of local people for use by the residents of the Parish. To this day the Village Hall Committee as trustees, ensure that the hall continues to act as a community centre in the spirit in which it was established.

Nearly ten years ago a major fundraising campaign took place which resulted in the updating and enlarging of the hall to enable it to meet the challenges of increased and changing use. These changes mean that it now offers enhanced facilities for existing events and hirers, as well as attracting more activities and services to meet the changing needs of our residents.

Unfortunately, recent storm damage resulted in the roof needing urgent repair, and whilst this was being undertaken a survey showed that major works were required on the exterior of the building. These include replacing the roof and two large windows, providing insulation to the roof area and repairs to the chimney stacks.

Estimates received indicate that these works will cost £150,000.

A group of dedicated volunteers are working hard to apply for grants and other charitable funding to contribute towards this target, and through talks with parishioners have identified a range of fundraising events and activities. A scale model of the hall was also made for donations and advertising, but Covid-19 has really limited many of these fundraising activities.

What the last year has clearly shown is how important the Village Hall is to residents in our community, especially those people who are socially isolated and have no, or poor internet access.
