Story

When founded 15 years ago, SMK was the first to acknowledge that campaigning is a discipline that needs to be recognised and supported. The charitys first activity was to establish the SMK National Campaigner Awards. Today, the Awards remain focused on championing and celebrating campaigning, demonstrating its value and acknowledging success.

This year, were doing things a little differently. Were making this celebration the biggest to date by combining it with our 15 year anniversary as a charity during the birthday month of Sheila McKechnie. And for the first time, we will open the Awards evening ceremony up to anyone who would like to celebrate with us.

SMKs recent Campaigners Survey 2019 revealed that civil society is regaining confidence to campaign after years of feeling restricted. Good news! However, 87% of respondents believe the legitimacy of campaigning is still under threat, with a particular emphasis on the conditions on funding that prevent lobbying and campaigning.

We believe now more than ever that our work must protect the space for campaigners voices in civil society - with your support, we can continue to do this.

Donations of any amount, big or small, would significantly improve our capacity to reach as many campaigners and change makers as possible, and ensure that we can continue to support, champion and celebrate the best in campaigning.

Here is a recap of SMKs core values and goals. By donating today, you would be supporting our work in which:

We believe civil society has a central and growing role to play in driving change, and could be doing much more.

People have a burning desire to drive change but there are barriers to their social power. We help clear their path.

We champion civil society in the face of threats and help people to make change.

We help people think strategically in complex times using our social change architecture to unlock their social power.

We are continually deepening our ideas and use that help people drive change.

About the charity

We recognise that change often begins in civil society. The power civil society has to drive truly transformational change – in one person’s life or our entire society – is most effective when we work at our best, without constraint. We call it ‘Social Power’. Our mission is to unleash it.
