St Peters Church has been at the heart of the town of Chertsey for over 800 years. Each year we impact thousands of local people through our community engagement and wellbeing initiatives.
Our work with children and young people both on site and in the community is considerable. We work with all our local schools on a regular basis as well as relating closely with many Chertsey families including those who are struggling in one way or another. Our work amongst the elderly is also extensive with weekly coffee mornings, afternoon events and community lunches we also minister to the towns three care homes on a regular basis. Our buildings are used daily from first thing in the morning until well into the evening supporting a large number of community organisations.
Our ability to grow and develop such programmes is severely limited by our buildings and so we are planning a major redevelopment to provide more flexibility and much needed space for our work and increased use by the wider Chertsey community.
Central to these plans is the re-ordering of the main church building. It is an attractive, much loved Medieval building, but since Victorian times, has been an inflexible space owing to the introduction of pews. We plan to return the building to its historic roots of an open floor space to be used by the wider community.
We will create a flexible and comfortable layout, and replace the pews with modern, stackable chairs, to enable the building to be used throughout the week by a larger and wider range of participants and activities.
Please help us to complete this amazing work by making a donation towards the cost of the chairs - as a guide each chair will cost £75.
Thank you!
