Now in its second year, the Sunnydown cycle challenge is looking to achieve even more for the local community.
Last year we raised over £18,000, allowing us to buy a pair of shoes for over 200 local children on free school meals, and also donate £1000 to the flying doctors. This year, aware of the mental health pressures facing our community, we want to go further and fund a Mental Health Practitioner for the local families that really need it.
Sunnydown is a small School in Caterham provides education for 80 young autistic men, following a GCSE curriculum. This academic pathway is supplemented through exciting opportunities such as landscape design, DIY projects, Life Skills and cultural cooking experiences to name a few. One of our major alternative offers is the cycle maintenance scheme where all boys have access to a qualified cycle mechanic and mentor, maintaining and repairing bikes in our very own cycle mechanic workshop. It is through this scheme that we now reach out to the wider community.
Covid has been difficult for many people and as a small maintained Special School, we want to give something back to our community. We are inviting you to be part of our attempt to unite for the benefit of people potentially less fortunate than ourselves.
As part of our cycle scheme, and inspired by The Gibb Challenge in Australia (https://thegibbchallenge.com.au/), we are cycling 660km around Kenley Aerodrome from 13th to 20th May 2022.
