Story

WO2 Mac McKenzie will lead a team from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine to take part in the 104th International Four Day Marches at Nijmegen, raising money for Fisher UK, part of the University Hospitals Birmingham Charity.

Mac says "I have been privileged to work amongst the most amazing Army, Navy and RAF professionals based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. In that time, hundreds of our injured service men and women have been treated by the QEHB medical staff, with many subsequently undergoing rehabilitation at Stanford Hall (DMRC). Whilst at the QEHB patients and their families can stay at Fisher House and be supported by the staff there. This amazing facility enables patients and families to use the home away from home located within a few minutes walking distance of the hospital wards. Since opening in 2013 over 6000 people have stayed at Fisher House. Fisher House does not receive either MOD nor NHS funding and relies solely on charitable donations.

This challenge covers 100 miles over 4 days in the height of summer carrying at least 15kg of kit. It is the largest civilian and military march in the world with over 45,000 civilian walkers and 5,000 military. The event attracts over 2 million visitors which creates a very special atmosphere.

The team has trained hard and qualified through the UK 50 mile event so look out for updates on our journey on the 104th Vierdaagse"

Thank you for your support.

UPDATE: FRIDAY 15 JULY 2022. Today the team visited Fisher House to see for themselves the facility available to patients and family members are able to access.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 20 JULY 2022 After the first day of the marches being cancelled due to excessive heat, the team set off this morning in just 32 degrees heat!

UPDATE THURSDAY 21 JULY 2002 Day 2 and another 25 miles in full military kit, a great day despite the rain, a few injuries but all ok ready for the final day.

UPDATE FRIDAY 22 JULY 2002 Final Day completed. 3 days of 25 miles each day in full military kit is not just a physical challenge but a mental challenge also. Extreme heat, torrential rain, blisters and back pain all thrown in too but they did it! Congratulations Team RCDM 2022.
