It was the early morning rounds on Saturday, and Teek's carer Toby opened his kennel with a shock. Teek was collapsed with evidence of diarrhoea and vomiting all around him. Shivering, he was so weak he could barely lift his head. Toby knew he had to act fast and raised the alarm on the radio. Even as Animal Manager Megan was calling Rosemary Lodge Veterinary Hospital, Senior Behaviour assessor Kirsty was preparing Teek to be transported.
Kirsty said "He screamed when we lifted him up, then we knew there was something causing him pain. But once he was on his feet, he walked slowly with us supporting him, into the van. I really thought he was on death's door."
At the Hospital Teek was met by Senior Veterinary Surgeon Michaela Taylor. Michaela said "As soon as I saw Teek, I knew his situation was very serious. He needed urgent treatment as he was dehydrated, weak, and in a lot of pain. We ran blood tests and performed some ultrasound and x-ray imaging of his abdomen."
Testing revealed that Teek had acute pancreatitis. This means his pancreas, a small organ in the stomach that aids digestion and manages hormones, is inflamed. Left untreated, pancreatitis can be fatal to dogs.
Pancreatitis is excruciating, so Teek was given powerful pain relief, anti-sickness medications, intravenous fluids to rehydrate him, and vital medicines to help with the movement of his intestines to treat his illness. Thanks to the quick actions of his carers and veterinary staff, Teek's episode was not fatal; however, he did require an extended and costly hospital stay.
After an anxiety-inducing weekend for the staff, Teek returned to Bath Cats and Dogs Home on the Monday to continue his recuperation. Teek has regular visits from our onsite vet to ensure we keep him as comfortable as possible during his recovery from his frightening experience. This will include necessary medications as well as lots of love and attention from his carers, who are delighted to have Teek back safe, if not quite sound just yet.
While Teek is on the mend, were now faced with the medical costs of his emergency hospital stay. So far, Teek's care has cost us £2303. Could you help pay for Teek's veterinary care and recovery?
