Story
Denyigba Lorlor, meaning 'Motherland Love' in the Ewe language, is a tree planting NGO based in the Volta Region of Ghana. Denyigba Lorlor's goal is to restore the beauty of the natural environment by planting magnificent trees. The NGO works with local communities to tend the trees, so also creates employment for local people.
In 2021, Denyigba Lorlor held their first big tree planting event. The Big Plant Out was supported by the international Dream Big Ghana community as well as the local authorities and volunteers. The Big Plant Out was a great success, with nearly 10,000 saplings prepared and planted in the Volta Region. All the trees are native to Ghana, including mango, cashew, mahogany, coconut, cassia, acacia and royal palm.
Many of the saplings were planted out along the roadsides. Roads are vital to the communities of rural Ghana, serving as trading points and centres of activity. A mature tree on the roadside offers shade to street vendors and waiting tro-tro and taxi passengers, as well as providing delicious free food for everyone in the area. Denyigba Lorlor NGO also planted saplings in partnership with local schools, teaching the students how to plant and care for the trees as they grow.
Denyigba Lorlor's next big challenge is to ensure as many as possible of the 10,000 saplings survive and grow into magnificent, mature trees. To make this happen, the NGO has employed six dedicated Tree Carers to water, prune and protect the saplings. The NGO has funds for the first two months thanks to the generosity of all those who supported the Big Plant Out, and we can provide the tools and materials that are needed. But we also need to invest in our three tree nurseries to ensure a supply of saplings for next year's Big Plant Out.
We plan to raise funds locally but we are also hoping the Dream Big family will keep supporting this amazing project. Anything you can offer would be HUGELY appreciated, and we promise to keep you up-to-date with the journey of our baby trees.
