The Hand That Cared

Fannie Storr, for most of her life, was a nurse devoted to caring for others. We aim to create a lasting tribute to Fannie, and to all those who dedicate their lives to care, by funding this incredible sculpture for Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Story

To remember and celebrate Fannies Storr's life her friend the sculptor Deborah Harrison created a beautiful carving which has won two awards. We would now like to make the sculpture a lasting tribute by raising the funds needed to give it a permanent home at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

"This sculpture is carved in alabaster and is based on the hand of Fannie Storr. For most of her life she was a nurse devoted to caring for others. This hand bears the lines of time, experience and strength. Although Fannie died from natural causes, many nurses today are giving their lives in service to the sick especially to those infected with Covid 19. So the hand is a poignant reminder of the lives who have cared for others." - Deborah Harrison, Sculptor

Fannie passed away on 4th May 2020, aged 88 years, and worked for many years in Gloucestershire as a Senior Nurse Tutor before becoming Director of Nursing Education. Fannie remained a staunch supporter of our work in retirement as both Governor and Volunteer Chaplain.

"During one of my last visits I took a photograph of her hand. I said I would like to carve it and she emotionally responded, I would like that very much. So this is in honour and to remember the life of Fannie Storr." - Deborah Harrison

Any funds raised over and above the amount required for this sculpture will be used for staff wellbeing projects at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
